Dara Singh passed away on Thursday morning following a brief illness 

The veteran actor-wrestler was 84. BS presents some lesser-known facts about him:

>> 'Mahabali' Dara Singh was the undisputed champion of champions in the wrestling ring and has won many times including the world championship in 1968.

>> He took to acting in 1962 and is best remembered for his portrayal of Hanuman in popular TV series 'Ramayan'.

>> In 1996 he was inducted into the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame.

>> His last big-screen appearance was in the Hindi film Jab We Met and in Punjabi, it was Dil Apna Punjabi.

>> He has fought against many world class wrestlers like Zbysko and Lou Thesz and defeated several of them. He also won the titles of Rustam-E-Hind and Rustam-E-Punjab and, together with Yukon Erich, also won the Canadian Open Tag Team Championship.

>> Dara Singh turned director in 1970 with Nanak Dukhiya Sub Sansar. It became a big hit and he directed several movies later.

Wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh's demise has been the most talked about topic on Twitter Thursday and it featured among top five trends on the microblogging site.

As the nation bid a tearful adieu to Dara Singh, who died at his home in Mumbai following a brief illness, his fans took to Twitter to express their grief at the demise of their "childhood" hero. 

The late actor was among the top five trends on microblogging site Twitter. From being Lord Hanuman in epic TV series "Ramayana" to fun-loving grandfather in "Hadh Kar Di", Dara Singh's fans remembered the actor for his various performances.

Dara Singh had heart of gold: Dilip Kumar

Bollywood thespian Dilip Kumar has described late wrestler-actor Dara Singh as a "gem" with "a heart of gold".

"Dara was a gem of a man, earthy and robust, with a heart of gold. I pray for his soul and for the family to bear the loss with fortitude," tweeted Dilip Kumar. Dara Singh, considered Bollywood's first macho man, died here Thursday morning following a brief illness. He was 84.

The man of steel was last seen in the Kareena Kapoor-Shahid Kapoor starrer "Jab We Met" as the stern, lovable 'Daarji'. Several fans and tinsel town celebrities paid their last respects to the star at his funeral Thursday afternoon.

National leaders condole Dara Singh's death

Top national leaders of the country Thursday condoled the passing away of wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh, describing him as an icon and a champion.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed deep grief over the death of Dara Singh, and said he had been an inspiration and icon to many generations in the country.

Dara Singh, a former Rajya Sabha member, died at his residence in Mumbai following a brief illness. He was 84.

In his condolence message, the prime minister said: "I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of Shri Dara Singh, who has been an inspiration and icon to many generations in our country."

"A self-educated son-of-the-soil, he rose to the heights of the entertainment world, sports arena and public life with humility and grace. His contribution to the Hindi and Punjabi cinema, wrestling and the Upper House of the Parliament will be remembered by millions."

Vice President M. Hamid Ansari said he was "deeply grieved" by the sad demise of the former MP, wrestling champ and actor.

"His acting career was most memorable for the intensity and diversity of characters that he had portrayed. His role as a nominated MP is remembered by one and all," he added.

Ansari said he and his wife send their heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and the wide circle of his friends and admirers.

"We pray to the Almighty to grant them the strength and fortitude to withstand this tragedy.

RIP Dara Singh: The Champion Loses His Final Fight
He wrestled his way from the ring to the big screen and the small one to enormous success. Dara Singh went from muscle man to hero and then uncle, father and friend in numerous character roles that endeared him to generations of fans. 


Few people would have made the transition from the 'akhara' to the showbiz stage with the success of Dara Singh, who passed away at his home in Mumbai Thursday morning at the age of 84 after a brief illness. 

A wrestling hero to some and a much loved cine artist to others, it was a long and eventful life that triumphed many odds. 

In his over five-decade long acting journey, he featured in over 140 films, including classics such as "Anand" and "Mera Naam Joker". 

It was a many splendoured life. 

There was Dara Singh the wrestler, Dara Singh, the hero of 'B' category action films such as "Tarzan Comes to Delhi" and "Samson" in the 1950s and 1960s, Dara Singh, the friendly 'pehelwan' in "Anand", and then Dara Singh who played Hanuman with great effect in the TV blockbusters "Ramayan" and "Mahabharat". 

He was last seen in the Kareena Kapoor-Shahid Kapoor starrer "Jab We Met" as the stern, lovable 'Daarji' who ruled over a noisy, close-knit Sikh family. Quite like the real life man, who intimidated people with his 6' 2" frame but soon won them over with outgoing nature and warmth.


Born to Balwant Kaur and Surat Singh Randhawa Nov 19, 1928 in a village in Amritsar, Punjab, Dara Singh was encouraged to take up wrestling due to his imposing physique and trained in 'pehelwani', an Indian style of wrestling. 

He became a star wrestler - and not just on Indian turf. 

Dara Singh took on international wrestlers like Lou Thesz and Stanislaus Zbyszko, and had over 500 professional fights to his credit - all undefeated.

He won the Professional Indian Wrestling Championship in 1953, and took away the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship trophy in 1959 by defeating Canadian champion George Godianko.

A recipient of titles like Rustam-E-Punjab (1966) and Rustam-E-Hind (1978), Dara Singh retired from active wrestling in 1983. 


In 1989, he published his autobiography "Meri Atmakatha" in Punjabi, and seven years later was inducted into the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame. 

And while he was wrestling, he was making a name in cinema - both Hindi and Punjabi. 

His first release was the 1952 "Sangdil" and then came a succession of films like "King Kong", "Faulad", "Sher-e-Watan" that earned him the name of Bollywood's action king.


During his hey day as a hero, he teamed up with Mumtaz in 16 Hindi films, including "Jawan Mard", "Raaka", "Aandhi Aur Toofan", "Daku Mangal Singh", "Boxer" and "Veer Bhimsen".

Another successful phase in Dara Singh's acting career came when he bagged the role of Hanuman in Ramanand Sagar's epochal TV series "Ramayan" in 1986. People liked him so much that B.R. Chopra roped him in to play the same role in "Mahabharat". 

Dara Singh gave viewers a glimpse of his humorous side through shows like "Hadd Kar Di" and "Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka". 

He became a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from August 2003 to August 2009. 

Dara Singh also took on the role of a writer, director and producer. In 1978, he launched Dara Studio, a self-contained mini-city with all facilities within the compound, in Punjab's Mohali district.

Dara Singh, who was widowed and got married for the second time, leaves behind his wife, six children - three sons and three daughters. And legions of fans of a man who defined machismo. 

Dara Singh was beyond his body

Wrestler turned actor Dara Singh was much beyond his body and was a great human being, said Bollywood choreographer Farah Khan whose late father Kamran, who was a successful stunt film-maker, was closely associated with the iconic actor. 

"He had done more than 25 films with my father. He was more than Dara Singh to me, " said Farah Khan. 


He was the gentlest person above his image as the he-man, she said. 

"He and my father will catch up in heaven, " said the famous Bollywood choreographer. 

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan paid his tribute on Twitter immediately after the news reached him. 


"Dara Singh ji passed away this morning. A great Indian and one of the finest humans. An entire era of his celebrated presence gone !" he tweeted. 

Shah Rukh Khan tweeted, "Wrestlers r made of sweat, determination & a hard to find alloy called guts...most apt for Dara Singhji our very own Superman.Will miss u sir."
Mahesh Bhatt posted, "Dara Singh passes away!Memories of this warm 'pehlwan' turned actor flicker in my memory.When childhood heroes die the world looks desolate."


Manoj Bajpayee tweeted, "The symbol of physical strength dara singh ji is no more with us now.may god bless his soul with peace!"
Abhishek Bachchan said, "Dara ji passes away. Had the honour of working with him in Shararat. The most gentle and kind man. Really looked up to him. Will miss him."



Shahid wrote, "RIP dara sigh ji ....... Was a privilege to have know n him and worked with him"


The actor who made his entry in Bollywood in 1960s was on ventilator for the past days in Mumbai's Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital where he was admitted on July 7 after a cardiac arrest. But his family took him home and he died there. 

Dara Singh, who played every role from hero to the large-hearted grandfather in his last film Jab We Met starring Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor, was an iconic figure in Indian celluloid and he was truly the original He-man of Bollywood and an action hero of repute. 

Final Journey

The end came at home after his family decided to take him back from the hospital to his residence in Juhu, doctors said. 

Family physician R K Agarwal said he died surrounded by his family. 

He might be cremated at around 2 pm, said the doctor.

Dara Singh critical, MRI shows damage to brain

Bollywood's he-man of the 1960s, Dara Singh, who was a wrestler turned a popular actor in movies for decades, continues to be very critical condition in a Mumbai hospital where he was admitted after a cardiac arrest, said doctors on Wednesday.

Singh was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute in Mumbai on Saturday evening.

Doctors attending on him on Wednesday said Singh's Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan has showed significant damage to his brain.

"Dara Singh continues to be very critical. His brain has been damaged significantly due to decreased oxygen supply to brain," said Dr Ram Narain, Chief Operating Officer of the hospital on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Singh's close friends from the film industry, including Dharmendra, Raza Murad and Farah Khan visited him at the hospital.

Singh's son Vindu said he needs prayers of his well-wishers now.

"Daraji will be kept under observation for at least 24 hours. Though he is being treated by great doctors, prayers are needed," Vindu told TOI.

Meanwhile, Singh's native village Dharmoochak near Amritsar is praying for his recovery.

Residents of the village are praying at a Hanuman temple for him since Sunday.

"The news is not good but we are hopeful and are praying to Lord Hanuman, he will be well soon," said Dara Singh's nephew Baljit Singh Pehelwan was quoted as saying by TOI.

Dara Singh, who was born in 1928 in Dharmoochak in Amritsar district of Punjab began as a wrestler but soon became a popular actor in Indian cinema and played several roles opposite yesteryear's actresses like Mumtaz in the 1960s.

He played in films like King Kong, which were inspired by Hollywood movies.

He was nominated member of Rajya Sabha by Bhartiya Janata Party during Aug 2003 – Aug 2009.

He had a successful career in television also and was a popular face in many of the TV serials since the 1980s.

But with the role of Hanuman in Ramayan on TV, he reached every household.

His films in the 1960s included titles like Toofan (1969), Jawan Mard (1966), Thakur Jarnail Singh (1966), Boxer (1965), Hum Sab Ustad Hain (1965), Khakaan (1965), Lutera (1965), Mahabharat (1965, played Bheem), Raaka (1965), Rustom-E-Hind (1965), Sher Dil (1965), Sikandar E Azam (1965) , Tarzan and King Kong (1965), Tarzan Comes to Delhi (1965), Teen Sardar (1965), Aandhi Aur Toofan (1964), Aaya Toofan (1964), Badshah (1964), Darasingh: Ironman (1964), Dara Singh Hercules (1964), Samson (1964), Veer Bhimsen (1964), Faulad (1963), Rustom-E-Baghdad (1963) and King Kong (1962).

Pray for Dara Singh, says Dharmendra

Actor Dharmendra, who visited hospitalised wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh whose condition is very critical, asked people to pray for his recovery.

"He is my darling brother. Let's pray for him. Doctors are trying their best. Please pray for him, " Dharmendra told reporters after his visit.

Dara Singh, who was hospitalised at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital Saturday, continues to be very critical and is now undergoing dialysis, a doctor had said Monday.

"He is still very critical. His condition has not deteriorated and he is holding up, but he requires a high dose of medication.The problem he came up with during hospitalization has now affected hiskidneys. His kidneys are not functioning the way they should, so we have to put him on dialysis, " hospital COO Ram Narain told.

Dara Singh, who won the title of Rustam-e-Hind for his wrestling prowess, entered the film world in the 1960s.

He appeared in various films like "Watan Se Door", "Rustom-e-Baghdad", "Sher Dil", "Sikandare- Azam", "Ham Sab Ustaad Hai", "Raaka", "Mera Naam Joker" and "Dharam Karam". He was last seen in a 2007 release "Jab We Met".

He has also done TV serials and is best known for his portrayal of Hanuman in various film and TV adaptions of the Ramayan.

Dharmendra also visited actor Shatrugan Sinha, who is admitted to the same hospital and said he seems to be recovering.

"Shatrugan Sinha is fine now, " he said.

Raza Murad, Farah Khan, Raju Srivastava were among others from the film industry who visited Dara Singh at the hospital.

Dara Singh still 'very critical'

Wrestler-actor Dara Singh, who is on life support system and undergoing dialysis, continued to battle for life Tuesday with doctors attending on him saying he was "very critical".

"He is still very critical. Very much with us," Ram Narain, COO, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, told Tuesday morning.

The 84-year-old was admitted to the hospital Saturday following a severe cardiac problem, which later led to a kidney malfunction.

In his prime, Dara Singh was a world-famous wrestler and won the title of "Rustam-e-Hind" for his prowess.

He entered the film world in the 1952, and featured in movies like "Watan Se Door", "Daada", "Rustom-E-Baghdad", "Sher Dil", "Sikandar E Azam", "Raaka", "Mera Naam Joker" and "Dharam Karam".

He is also remembered for his portrayal of Hanuman in 1980s TV series "Ramayan".

Wrestler-actor Dara Singh continues to be very critical and is now undergoing dialysis, a doctor said here Monday.

The 84-year-old was taken to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital Saturday following a severe cardiac problem.

He remained critical Sunday, and his condition hasn't improved since.

"He is still very critical. His condition has not deteriorated and he is holding up, but he requires a high dose of medication. The problem he came up with during hospitalisation has now affected his kidneys. His kidneys are not functioning the way they should, so we have to put him on dialysis," Ram Narain, COO, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, told.
