Murder saga resolved with discovery of six skeletons
The mystery of the missing Bollywood startlet Laila Khan and her family was resolved Wednesday with police announcing the discovery of six skeletons and arresting her stepfather for the murders.

Although Parvez Tak had confessed to killing the actor and her five family members in a fit of rage, Mumbai police said the murders could have been pre-planned.

Making a breakthrough in the case that had baffled everyone for months, the Crime Branch recovered the skeletons from Laila Khan's farmhouse in Igatpuri near Nashik, around 130 km from here.

Preliminary forensic reports reveal that five of the skeletons were of women and one of a man.

Pieces of jewellery, synthetic clothing and underclothing were found on the skeletons.

According to police, Parvez Tak, the third husband of Laila Khan's mother Selina, said he first killed her (Selina) in a fit of rage.

Laila and her siblings witnessed Selina's murder and so he killed them too, said police.

"Parvez Tak confessed to having murdered Laila Khan along with her entire family. He also took help from Shakir Wani Hussain, a Kashmiri watchman he had hired two months before the incident. On Tuesday, he agreed to point out the spot where he disposed off the bodies, " Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy told reporters here.

"Parvez Tak said he had a heated argument with Selina and killed her. Laila and her siblings were on the first floor and came down after hearing loud voices. He then killed them with the help of Shakir, " Roy said.

Roy said police were not ruling out the possibility of the murders having being premeditated.

"Parvez Tak was insecure about the fact that Selina was still in touch with her second husband Asif Shaikh and that she relied on him and trusted him, " Roy said.

"Moreover, Laila was married to a man who reportedly said the family would have a better life if they settled in Dubai. Selina trusted Shaikh to dispose of the family's properties in Mumbai, " he said.

Parvez Tak did not possess a passport and felt he would be left stranded in India if the family moved to Dubai.

Also, two months before the incident in February 2011, Parvez Tak had sacked the watchman of the farmhouse and hired Shakir Wani Hussain, a resident of Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir.

Parvez Tak, also from Kishtwar, was a small-time road contractor. He is also a suspected member of the militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Police said that after the murders, Parvez Tak and Hussain first went to Laila Khan's flat in Andheri in Mumbai in a sports utility vehicle, packed items of day-to-day use and went back to Igatpuri.

"In Igatpuri, they also took with them Laila's sports utility vehicle Mitsubishi Outlander. Police in Jammu recovered the abandoned Scorpio last year. The Outlander was recovered earlier this year from outside Tak's office in Kishtwar, " Roy said.

Police also recovered two knives and a rod from the crime scene. One knife was found in the pit where the bodies were buried and the other knife and the rod were found inside the house.

"Both Parvez Tak and Hussain will be charged with murder (Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code) and causing disappearance of evidence of offence (Section 201), " Roy said.

Five units of the Crime Branch along with forensic experts and toxicology doctors from J.J. Hospital in Mumbai were part of the search operation that started Tuesday after Tak agreed to point out the crime scene.

Roy said the farmhouse was set on fire with diesel taken from generators.

"This must have been done to destroy fingerprints, blood stains and other evidences of murder, " he said.

Roy also said that although forensic examination reports would shed light on the identity of the six skeletons, Parvez Tak's confession matched the description of the crime scene and the events that took place when the family was murdered.

Apart from Laila (30), her mother Selina (52), her sisters Zara (25) and Azmina (32), brother Imran (25) and cousin Reshma Khan (19) were the most likely victims.

A Mumbai metropolitan court Monday remanded Parvez Tak to police custody till July 19.

Laila Khan, whose real name was Reshma Patel, was last seen in the 2008 film "Wafaa" with veteran actor Rajesh Khanna.

Now Parvez Tak confesses to killing Laila and family
In his tell-all to Mumbai police, prime accused Tak stated that he and his associate first killed Saleena Patel ” Laila's mother ” and then the rest of the family, over her decision to give the power of attorney of her property to her second husband

Parvez Tak, who is accused of murdering six members of starlet Laila Khan’s family, has confessed that he and his friend killed them by pummelling them with sticks and rods, and then buried them in the vicinity of their Igatpuri farmhouse.

Beaten to death: Laila Khan had settled on moving to the Gulf state, with her family, to solemnise her marriage with Sonu alias Vafi Khan, who is the son of close Dawood aide Kamal Jadhwani

Mumbai police who recorded the confession while in Jammu & Kashmir, brought Tak back to the city last night, and will produce him in court today.

Tak in his confession has given chilling details of the killings. According to the police, Tak and his friend Shakir Hussein, both residents of Nali Bhunzwah, Kishtwar District, J&K, murdered all six family members a few days before the victims had decided to leave for Dubai.

Laila Khan had settled on moving to the Gulf state, with her family, to solemnise her marriage with Sonu alias Vafi Khan, who is the son of close Dawood aide Kamal Jadhwani.

According to Tak’s confession, Laila’s mother Saleena’s decision to make her second husband Asif Shaikh the in-charge of her property in Mumbai before they left for Dubai had made him feel insulted and angry. After hearing her choice, he got into a heated argument with Saleena, which ultimately led to the killing of Laila and five of her family members.

According to a source, Tak — who is the third husband of Saleena — was riled at the fact that his wife gave the power of attorney to her second husband.

After confronting her at the farmhouse, he got into a verbal spat with Saleena over the issue.

As the quarrel got heated, Tak allegedly pushed his wife due to which she sustained a grievous head injury. When family members rushed to her aid, they saw her lying in a pool of blood, and assumed that Saleena was dead.

They started wailing and in a fit of anger attacked Tak, and started beating him up. Hearing the loud noises, Tak’s friend Hussein, who was working as a watchman at the Igatpuri farmhouse, rushed to his help. Soon they joined forces, and beat all the family members to death with sticks and rods.

Sources added that after killing them, the accused carried the bodies to a vehicle, drove a few metres in the surrounding forest area, and buried them. All the corpses were dumped into a single grave, which was dug by Tak and Hussein, along with their jewellery.

After burying them the duo drove to Jammu in the same vehicle.

Sources added that Tak was introduced to Saleena at a function in Mumbai that was organised by an NGO. They exchanged mobile numbers, and soon started keeping in touch. Saleena invited Tak to Mumbai, who wasted no time in getting here.

After receiving Tak at the railway station, Saleena took him to her residence and after staying together for a few months, she proposed marriage, which he accepted. After the alliance, Tak began to oversee all family matters. So the decision to give importance to Asif may not have gone down well with him.

Kishtwar cops investigated the entire case, and stated that their counterparts in Maharashtra have only to find the bodies from the spot disclosed by Tak during questioning.

A few officers from Mumbai police will now leave for Igatpuri to locate the corpses.

Kishtwar police have already mobilised men and machinery to arrest Shakir who went underground soon after he was released from detention.

According to J&K cops, they are confident that Shakir will soon be behind bars and will be handed over to Mumbai police They have given a clean chit to Asif and Afgan Khan, stating that the duo played no role in killing the actress and her family and that all the prior claims made by Tak were false. He only confessed to his crime three days ago.

`I killed Laila Khan and her family`
Asif Shaikh has confessed to Mumbai cops that he, along with Parvez Tak, killed the starlet, her family and threw their bodies from the hills of Igatpuri

The Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested Asif Shaikh in an effort to solve the mystery shrouding the fate of starlet Laila Khan and her family, but it is not prepared to trust the suspect’s confession just yet and is waiting to interrogate Parvez Ahmed Tak, who is currently in custody of the Jammu & Kashmir police.

Shaikh was detained from his residence in Juhu Galli after Tak mentioned his name during interrogation. Shaikh confessed that he and Tak shot and killed Laila and her family and threw their bodies from a cliff in Igatpuri.

Wanting to tally the two suspects’ confessions, the crime branch visited Jammu to seek custody of Tak, but the process was postponed for a week due to improper paperwork.

The case came to the fore after Laila’s biological father Nadir Patel complained to the police about his daughter’s disappearance last year and mentioned Shaikh and Tak in his complaint. Shaikh was summoned to the Oshiwara police station and he said that he had divorced Laila’s mother five years ago and was unaware of the family’s whereabouts. Shaikh was released after his statement was recorded.

However, the crime branch Unit VIII arrested Shaikh after Tak mentioned his name during questioning by the Jammu police.

Tak confessed that he, along with Shaikh and Sonu alias Vafi took the family to a guesthouse in Igatpuri and then to Delhi. Sonu then accompanied Laila and her family to Dubai.

Sources added that the Mumbai Crime Branch will first tally the statements of both suspects once they have Tak in custody and decide whether to launch a search operation for the bodies.

DIG Jammu, Gharib Das said, “Tak earlier told the police that they had escaped to Dubai, but now he has changed his statement. We cannot trust him and until and unless we find the bodies, we cannot say that they have been killed.”

Not in the country?

Abrar Ahmed Choudhary, Dy SP Headquarters, Kishtwar, Jammu said that Tak revealed during interrogation that Laila had married Sonu and left the country. He added that the Mumbai police would be arriving in Kishtwar and would receive full cooperation. A person named Jadhvani arranged fake passports for five members of her family to flee the country.

Laila Khan's father dismisses claim on her killing

Laila Khan`s father dismisses claim on her killing
Nadir Shah Patel, father of the missing Bollywood starlet Laila Khan, Thursday challenged the claim of her step-father Parvez Iqbal Tak that the actress, along with four of her family members, was killed near Mumbai in 2011.

Speaking to a private news channel here, Patel said he did not "believe" Tak's claim that Laila, her mother Saleena Begum, siblings Zara, Imran, cousin Reshma and a domestic help were allegedly killed and their bodies disposed of somewhere around Mumbai in February 2011.

Patel was responding to revelations Tak made before Jammu and Kashmir Police, which provided vital leads in her missing case.

Tak, who married Saleena Begum after she divorced her husband Nadir Shah Patel, was arrested last month in Kishtwar, about 230 km from Jammu. He is suspected to be a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant.

Patel said if what Tak claims was true, the Mumbai police should register a first information report and investigate the case.

The Mumbai police denied any knowledge on the alleged murders, though a team was likely to leave for Jammu soon for further investigation.

Last month, a police team went to Jammu to probe the case which has strong Mumbai and Maharashtra connections.

Patel said Tak and his partner Asif Sheikh came regularly to their Santacruz home and he always felt uneasy in their presence.

"I always used to caution my family members to beware of them, I found their behaviour suspicious, but they did not heed to me," Patel said.

He admitted that the Tak-Sheikh duo was planning to dupe him in some property matters as Tak was found with a fake PAN card bearing his name (Patel's) name.

Referring to a mysterious fire a few months ago which partly damaged their bungalow in Igatpuri, a hill-station in Maharashtra's Nashik district, around 130 km from Mumbai, Patel contended that there could a link between Laila and her family's disappearance and the fire, but declined to elaborate.

Mumbai police Crime Branch Tuesday registered a kidnapping case against Tak. Patel said he was called by police for that.

Laila, whose original name is Reshma Patel, was last seen in a Hindi movie "Wafaa" with Rajesh Khanna in 2008.

According to sources, the Mumbai police found Laila to have questionable connections, which allegedly led to her disappearance from Mumbai in 2011.

After tracking her mobile phone, her last call records showed her to be at her farm house in Igatpuri.

Sources claimed that Laila was close to suspected Lashkar militant Tak through a Bangladesh-based suspected terrorist Munir Khan, whom she allegedly married.

Jammu and Kashmir's Deputy Inspector General of Police Gareeb Das said that Tak, who said sharpshooters had been hired to kill Laila and her family, had been cooperating with interrogators and gradually revealing information on the case.
