Bhaag Milkha Bhaag shooting to resume after summer break

As north India has been reeling under scorching heat, producer-director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has decided to halt the shooting of "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" saying that most of the scenes have to be shot outdoors and this will happen once the weather is bearable.

"We have taken a summer break because it is all outdoors. Once the summer is over, we plan to go back to the north to shoot it, " he said and added, "We are planning to release it sometime next year."

The film is a biopic on athlete Milkha Singh, fondly called Flying Sikh, and Farhan Akhtar is playing the title role. Sonam Kapoor too features in it.

From thriller "Aks" to social drama "Rang De Basanti", Mehra, who has worked on various genres, says shooting a biopic is much more challenging than making a pure fiction.

"When I decided to make a film, it threw more challenges for me, because I had not done a film on a true life. I knew everything which I was doing. Each scene has been a big responsibility as it belonged to a real life person. Here the challenge was how to do it in an interesting manner, " he said.

"Fortunately, we have a lovely story to tell. The human interest quotient is very high. Whenever I tell the story to my friends, they like it. The script has been written in a very interesting way, " he added.

With experiential films like "Shanghai" and "Gangs of Wasseypur" succeeding at the box office, the director feels that the Hindi film industry is moving in a positive direction, which is the reflection of a changing society.

"There is always a lot to do than what we are actually doing. We made great cinema in the 1950s and 1960s. Then we lost out because our society lost out and we started moving towards groupism.

Now the society is changing again and giving importance to prosperity and education. You see this reflecting in cinema also. And there will be a lot more to give to our people rather than just sheer escapism. It all depends on how the country develops, " he said.

Is Sonam Kapoor dressing down?

Known for her designer threads, the actress has to try real hard to play a village girl!

Fashionista Sonam Kapoor is presently working hard on how to dress down. The actress, known more for her style statements, is preparing to go de-glam to essay a simple village girl in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s biopic on Milkha Singh.

Though the film rolled earlier this year, Sonam was not part of the shoot schedule. She joins the unit in August for the next shooting stint. What’s adding to her excitement is not only going sans make-up and designer label but also the fact that she will be shooting on the India-Pakistan border.

Says Sonam, “I have never been to the Indo-Pak border before and shooting there will be an experience for me. I am very excited to start shooting. I have been working hard to play the character of a village girl.”

She has dressed simply in her earlier films like Delhi 6 and a bit in Mausam. And now, the star feels this will be real stark, as she has not gone so rustic and simple before on screen.

Though her co-star Farhan Akhtar has interacted with the Flying Sikh as preparations for the shoot, Sonam is yet to meet him and his family members. Her character is depicted as bringing about a big change in Milkha Singh’s life.

How much more tax? Sonam Kapoor says the government is 'corrupt'

How much more tax? Sonam Kapoor says the government is `corrupt`
The government's decision to levy 12 percent service tax on film and TV actors has left many fuming. While veteran actress Hema Malini feels it would burden producers further, actor Arshad Warsi believes it would leave many actors jobless and Sonam Kapoor says the government is "corrupt".

Many feel it's time the government stopped harrassing actors.

"This move is going to encourage a parallel economy. Artists take cheques, there is no black money or cash. Now they will want to take cash. It will become a burden on the producers. As it is the government does not help film industry and now this will become a problem, " Hema told.

The government announced plans to levy the tax on actors' acting as well as endorsement assignments, starting Sunday. It will be in an addition to the income tax they pay.

Vipul Shah, who produced "Singh Is Kinng" and "Force", is worried about the producers' woes.

"It is a terrible decision. They have the left the producers with nothing. Maybe they are under the myth that the film industry has lot of money and so decided to put a tax on it. The ticket rates don't have any service tax, so ultimately it is the producers who pay it from their pockets, " Shah told.

He says the decision will have a direct impact on producers of small budgets films.

"More films will lose its money in the coming days. Just imagine about the small budget films and other regional films... how do they pay service tax on every technician? I hope they realise that its a wrong decision, " the producer added.

Actors are dejected by the move.

"With this service tax, there will be some more jobless actors... Blame it on the tax?

Very soon all actors' payment will go directly to the government and they will start giving us the little per cent that is left for us as salary, Arshad tweeted Monday.

Terming the decision as "ridiculous", Divya Dutta tweeted: "'They' have no idea how some of the actors survive in this tough terrain of our profession. We are as much employed professionals as any in any field.

"I strongly appeal every one of our faculty to stand 'tall' against the implementation of such injustice. Please spread the word."

Divya believes this development will impact the strugglers more than it would affect the established stars.

"That tax thing is okay for those who (are) doing well, but for those who (are) struggling, not a good news to pay more, " she added.

Choreographer-filmmaker Farah Khan, who is set to make her acting debut with "Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi", is disappointed.

"And just as I've turned 'actress', the government has decided to also charge 12.5 per cent service tax to all actors! This is too much. Kitna nichodogey yaar (How much will you squeeze us)?" posted Farah.

Calling the government "corrupt", actress Sonam said: "We are just filling every politicians pockets with money. If my money really went into developing my country I'd be more than happy to give it."
